Shockingly sad news
..a delusional woman drowned her 7 month old baby on Friday March 7th. When police arrived she was running naked and screaming in the road telling the police that Jesus came down from heaven and took her child back.
This horribly sad news shows how deeply ingrained mysticism can cover for dangerous mental conditions. Often church leaders provide mental health counseling and may be wary of sending their flock to mainstream psychologists or doctors for treatment. Even if she was not under treatment, religious indoctrination makes it difficult to discern real experiences from “visions” when the consequences may be very real.
While this situation is sad we need to look at how her sick assumptions could have influenced her internal argument during this psychotic episode. If you believe in….
- The old testament God
- People come back to life
- Ascension to heaven can and does happen
- An inevitable return of Jesus
Then a psychotic break hallucinating a homicidal benevolent jesus could be very convincing.
We are all saddened by this story.
We hope to point out how dangerous religious counselling, indoctrination of youth, and mistrust of observable science can be. Promoting mental health, and a realistic view of the universe can save lives.
