The latest push for legalized discrimination in California AB 2237
Bakersfield Representative Shannon Grove Introduced a new bill that would amend the Unruh civil rights act to allow discrimination only under religious grounds. While California is progressive I don’t think that adding ways to discriminate will really move things forward.
Religion as a shield for Hate
California is unlikely to pass such a bill, but the pattern of national discrimination is striking. Opponents of civil rights show how desperate they are by relying on the unquestionable power of religion to discriminate. This effort may backfire, and begin the slippery slope of questioning religious authority when it comes to morality and government policy.

Hopefully we can learn from Arizona and put these “turn away the gay” or “sincerely held religious belief” arguments to rest.
